Stampin Up Watercolor Winter – Cascading Poinsettia Christmas Card

Today I am using the Stampin Up Watercolor Winter Stamp Set to instruct you on a technique called Cascading Images.  This technique is wonderful for adding a series of connecting images over the top of a background to create a focal point.  The poinsettia stamp in the Stampin Up Watercolor Winter Stamp Set is great for this technique.

Stampin Up Supplies (and catalog item numbers) used for the Stampin Up Watercolor Winter card:

Stamps:  Stampin Up Watercolor Winter Stamp Set (129727) and Come to Bethlehem Stamp Set (120591)

Paper:  Riding Hood Red Card Stock (111348), Whisper White Card Stock (100730), and Lucky Limeade Card Stock (122926)

Ink:  Real Red Classic Ink (126949), Real Red Stampin Write Marker (199952), and Riding Hood Red Write Marker (119701)

Accessories:  Big Shot Die-Cutting Machine (113439), Blender Pen (102845), Petals-A-Plenty Embossing Folder (116824), Dimensionals (104430), and Post-it Note

Instructions for creating the cascading poinsettia:

  • Cover in Real Red Classic Ink the poinsettia outline stamp and stamp onto a Post-it Note (henceforth called sticky note) and a 4″ x 5-1/4″ piece of Whisper White Card Stock (when stamping on the sticky note, ensure you stamp on the portion that contains the stickiness on the back side),
  • Cut out the poinsettia on the sticky note, cutting right on or just inside the lines,

  • Place the sticky note over the stamped poinsettia on the Whisper White Card Stock,
  • Ensure the sticky note does not cover any outside lines of the poinsettia,
  • Cover the poinsettia stamp with Real Red Classic Ink and stamp the image just below the first poinsettia, ensuring you stamp on the bottom of the sticky note,
  • When stamping the second poinsetta, stamp it slightly to the right of the first one,

  • Cover the poinsettia stamp again with Real Red Classic Ink and, leaving the sticky note in place, stamp the poinsettia above the center one in the same manner as that done for the second poinsettia, and
  • Remove the sticky note.

  • If you got out your crafting tools and followed along in creating this image, you have just learned about and created a Cascading Image.

Let’s move on to finishing the Stampin Up Watercolor Winter Christmas card.

  • Color the poinsettias using a Real Red Stampin Marker and Stampin Up Blender Pen (use the marker around the center of each poinsettia and then spread the ink with the Blender Pen),
  • Add some yellow glitter glue in the center of the flowers and let dry,
  • Cut out the cascading poinsettias,

  • (OPTIONAL) Punch or die cut leaves to adhere to the underside of the poinsettias,
  • Attach dimensions (double layer) on the back of the piece,
  • Place a 4″ x 5-1/4″ piece of Whisper White Card Stock inside the Petals-A-Plenty Embossing Folder and run through the Big Shot,
  • Cut an 8-1/2″ x 5-1/2″ piece of Riding Hood Red Card Stock and fold (or score) in half to create a card base,
  • Attach the embossed Whisper White Card Stock to the card base,
  • Attach the cascading poinsettias onto the left side of the Whisper White Card Stock (see picture),
  • Add a sentiment (I used the “Merry Christmas” sentiment from the Come to Bethlehem stamp set),
  • Finish decorating as desired.

How to Make Paper Poinsettias

I have for you today a beautiful card featuring paper poinsettias.  In this post, I’ll share how to make paper poinsettias, but first I’ll provide information on the card.

Paper Poinsettias

The card base is a piece of 8-1/2″ x 5-1/2″ Cherry Cobbler Card Stock (119685), folded in half.  I used the snowflake design from the Be of Good Cheer Designer Series Paper (DSP) (126896) for the first layer on the card.

Be of Good Cheer Designer Series Paper

The second and third layers were made with the Labels Collection Framelits (125598), Cherry Cobbler Card Stock, and Gumball Green Card Stock (126840).  Each “label” was embossed with the Snow Burst Embossing Folder (retired), which goes so well with the snowflake design in the DSP.

HOW TO MAKE PAPER POINSETTIAS TUTORIAL

Supplies Needed:  Blossom Petals Builder Punch (121808), Boho Blossoms Punch (119858), Cherry Cobbler Card Stock (119685), Gumball Green Card Stock (126840), Tombow Multipurpose Liquid Glue(110755), Vanilla Shimmer Smooch Spritz (118772), and Dazzling Diamonds Glitter (102023)

A.  Cutting Petals, Leaves, and Flowers

1.  Punch out six Cherry Cobbler large petals and six of the smaller petals with the Blossom Petals Builder Punch.

2.  Punch out two Cherry Cobbler flowers from the Boho Blossoms Punch. (See the below picture for which petals and flower to punch – picture doesn’t show the second flower from the Boho Blossoms Punch).

Paper Poinsettias

3.  Punch out three Gumball Green large petals and three of the smaller petal from the Blossom Petals Builder Punch, and two of the flower (same as above) from the Boho Blossoms Punch.

Paper Poinsettias

4.  Cut out two Summer Starfruit flowers (see picture) with the Boho Blossoms Punch.

Paper Poinsettias

5.  Use a stylus to create veins in the leaves and petals.

B.  Shaping the Petals, Leaves, and Flowers

1.  Use a rounded top tool (e.g., tip of an artist paint brush handle, top of a piercing tool, etc.) and a  piercing mat or mouse pad to create “cupping” of the leaves, petals, and flowers.  To do this, place a leaf, petal, or flower (henceforth, cutout(s)) onto the mat/pad, press down on the cutout with the rounded top tool while moving the tool in a circular motion around the cutout.  This will cause the cutout to cup upwards.  Repeat this for all pieces.  (See the two pictures below).

 Paper Poinsettias

2.  Use a small paint brush handle or other small round tool to turn down the two sides of each petal and leaf and turn up the pointed end of each.  Pinch the bottom together of each.  (I really like how these items get a shine to them from this process.)

Paper Poinsettias

3.  Leave the flowers cupped upward.  The Summer Starfruit flowers need to be cupped more so than the others.

Paper Poinsettias

C.  Assemble the Paper Poinsettia Leaves

1.  Apply Tombow glue to one petal of the Boho Blossoms flower and attach one poinsettia petal.

Paper Poinsettias

2.  Turn the glued cutouts over and ensure the petal is lined up with the tip of the flower’s petal. Paper Poinsettias

3. Add glue to another petal of the Boho Blossoms flower and attach the smaller poinsettia petal.

4.  Continue Step 3, alternating the sizes of the poinsettia petals, until there are three large and three small petals adhered to the Boho Blossoms flower.

5.  Follow Steps 3 and 4 until you have two Cherry Cobbler flowers and one Gumball Green leaves. Paper Poinsettias

 6.  Using Tombow glue, adhere one Cherry Cobbler flower on top of the Gumball Green leaves, aligning a large petal over a small leaf.

Paper Poinsettias

7.  Adhere on top of the Cherry Cobbler flower the second Cherry Cobbler flower.

8.  Adhere the second Gumball Green Boho Blossom flower on top of the Cherry Cobbler flower.

Paper Poinsettias

9.  Spritz the paper poinsettia with Vanilla Shimmer Smooch Spritz.

10.  Squeez the two Summer Starfruit flowers together and glue one on top of the other.

11.  Glue the Summer Starfruit flowers on top of the Gumball Green flower.

12. Touch the petals of the Summer Starfruit flowers with glue and sprinkle on Dazzling Diamonds Glitter.

Stampin Up Postage Due Stamp Set – Happy Birthday

Stampin Up Postage Due Stamp Set is one of the coolest new sets from the Annual Catalog.  I know this stamp set was designed to be “vintage” like; however, I am a “think outside of the box” type of person and that influences my art work. As I shared yesterday, I encourage you to not let the “vintage” like stamp set or the words, “postage due”, influence your creations when using this stamp set.  By that I mean, don’t believe that your creation with this stamp set has to be vintage or relate to “postage”.  Think outside of the box!

To that end, my second card share featuring the Stampin Up Postage Due Stamp Set is certainly not vintage or postage-related.  I wanted a card with Tempting Turquoise and Daffodil Delight colors as I love that color combination.  Here it is!

STAMPIN’ UP! SUPPLIES (with Catalog item numbers):

Stamp Set:  Stampin Up Postage Due (126397 – c) and Apothecary Art (125527 – c)

Paper:  Whisper White Card Stock (100730), Tempting Turquoise Card Stock (102067), Daffodil Delight Card Stock (119683), and Polka Dot Parade Designer Series Paper (126902 – daffodil delight)

Ink:  VersaMark Ink Pad (102283), Tempting Turquoise Classic Ink (126952), and Permanent Turquoise Marker (local craft store)

INSTRUCTIONS:

1.  Cut card stock or designer series paper according to the following:

  • 8-1/2″ x 5-1/2″ piece of Daffodil Delight Card Stock (fold in half to create the card base)
  • 5-1/4″ x 4″ piece of Whisper White Card Stock
  • 4-1/2″ x 3-1/4″ pieced of Tempting Turquoise Card Stock
  • two 2-5/8″ x 2″ of Polka Dot Parade Designer Series Paper (daffodil delight)

2.  Cover the bicycle stamp with VersaMark Ink and stamp it onto the Tempting Turquoise Card Stock.

3.  Cover with White Embossing Powder and set with the Heat Tool.

4.  Punch out four flowers of your choice from one of the designs of the Boho Blossoms Punch.

5.  Using Stampin’ Dimensionals, adhere together two flowers to create one flower (I double up the dimensionals).  Repeat with the other two punched out flowers.

6.  Using a turquoise permanent marker, color two Basic Pearls and attach to the center of the two flowers.

7.  Cut a piece of the Daffodil Delight 1/4″ Stitched Grosgrain Ribbon and tie it into a bow.

8.  Using Tempting Turquoise ink, stamp “Happiest” “Birthday” from the Apothecary Art Stamp Set onto the Whisper White Card Stock as shown in picture.

9.  Assemble the card as stated below (also reference picture):

  • Attach the two pieces of the Daffodil Delight designer series paper to the Whisper White Card Stock; one on the bottom-left and the other on the top-right as shown in picture.

Come back tomorrow for another Stampin Up Postage Due creation!

Stampin Up Postage Due

Do you allow the title of a stamp set to determine how you create with it, such as the Stampin Up Postage Due stamp set?  Does the word, postage, within the title tell you that your creation has to be postage-related?  How do you find it used mostly when you surf the Internet?  I have found many stampers allowing the title to impact their paper crafting and they tend to use more earth tones in their creations with a stronger focus on male-related projects.

In my card share today, I did not allow the Stampin Up Postage Due stamp set title to impact the way I created my card.  I focused more on the main stamp and the bicycle within that stamp.  From my perspective, the bicycle in the stamp is a female bike, and anything female-related influenced how I would create my card.  Thinking of a female, I think of bright colors; thus, bright colors make up on my card.

My posts for the next couple of days will also focus on the Stampin Up Postage Due stamp set.  Come back to see those.

Paper Flowers – Stampin Up

Making paper flowers to enhance your paper crafts is such a hot trend, and it’s so much fun to do.  There are many techniques for making paper flowers and various mediums from which to make them (i.e., card stock, crepe paper, fabric, metal, tissue paper, etc.).  Have you made any paper flowers for your paper crafts?  If you haven’t, this post will provide you with instructions on how to make them from card stock.  I’m sure you’ll enjoy having elegant paper flowers on your greeting cards and other crafts.
The technique that I discuss below is simple and I call it “scrunching”.  Follow these steps to make “scrunched” paper flowers:

STEP 1: Punch five flowers from card stock (of any color) using the Blossom Punch (125603), or a floral punch or floral die cut of your choice.

STEP 2:  Spritz each flower with water,  Vanilla Shimmer Smooch Spritz (118772), or other liquid of your choice.  This is important for getting the right texture when you scrunch the petals.

STEP 3:  After spritzing them, layer the five flowers one on top of another (you can offset them as well).
STEP 4:  Using a Paper-Piercing Tool (126189) and Mat (126199), poke a hole in the center of the layered flowers.
STEP 5:  Insert a brad into the hole and spread the prongs.
STEP 6:  Beginning with the top flower, scrunch it tightly while wet.
STEP 7:  Continue scrunching the remaining layers.

STEP 8:  While the layers are wet (if not, spritz again), reshape the flower to your desire and let it completely dry.

(now that the flower is dry, the color of the card stock is true.)

STEP 9:  Use your beautiful flower on a card, scrapbook page, or 3-D paper craft.

The following picture shows other flowers I made with the Blossom Party Die (115971) and Boho Blossoms Punch (119858).  Add a piece of Daffodil Delight or Summer Starfruit card stock as the top flower to create the appearance of a stamen.

Enjoy making paper flowers!
